This fake Daytona booklet was purchased off eBay
a long time by a fellow collector who donated it for this website. It is
a bad counterfeit.

Which brochure is a fake?
Answer: The Fake is on the Right
Notice the word "COSMOGRAPH" is in the wrong type style and the word
also appears below Rolex at the bottom. Is this a version I am not aware
of? It seems they just threw it on there.

Looking at the brochures at an angle. Notice the image from
the fake (below) has no impressions from the printing equipment showing from the
other side. This is not
correct.

Now take a look at the correct brochure(below), notice just above the
bright spot how there are little bumps showing from the image on the
other side. Even the 'R' on this side of the page is not lying flat on
the page, but is slightly pressed down. This is how it an original is supposed to look
from an angle. Rolex
used printing methods that made an indentation in the page during the
1950s and 1960s when printing these brochures. This is not the case on
all their printed material, but on these brochures it was.

The same indentation is visible on the top portion of the brochure, just
look at the word 'COSMOGRAPH.'

But there are more discrepancies, like the example below.

The image on the left is from the correct
brochure. The paper has a yellow color from aging. The image on
the right is from the fake. It is printed on paper that is very bright
white and appears to have no aging, This is an important clue. When
examined closely, the images on the fake are also inferior quality.
On this image from the back page, notice the Pan Am globe from the fake
(left) has lines that are plugging up, while the Pan Am globe from the
correct brochure (right) has even finer lines that do not plug in when
printed.
In conclusion, this is fake brochure is not of good quality and should
not fool anyone who has a sample to compare or has taken the time to
look at this section. |
